Chapter 1

"I'm so tired of seeing you people," the white cop said, his tone dripping with disdain. "I do apologize, sir, but you've never seen me nor my brother before, so what are you talking about?" I retorted in my white girl voice. It always tripped people out how I could switch it up like that without missing a beat. Just an hour ago, I was in the club rapping like my idol Remy Ma. But now, here I was, handling this cop with finesse.

"You know what I mean... You N..." he started to say, "Say it, I mutha fucking dare you. Because when I'm done with your ass and this place, you're gonna be kissing these niggas' asses. Get up, Princess and Antwon. Let's bounce," my mother Sasha bellowed as she burst into the interrogation room, shutting down the cop mid-sentence.

"Who the fuck are you?" the cop demanded. "I am Sasha fucking Brown, the mother of these two minors you have sitting in here," she declared. "Well, Mrs. Brown, you can have a seat and shut the fuck up because I am not done questioning these..." he started, but my momma wasn't having any of it.

"Lets go," momma said to me, her voice firm. "Gal, I said they ain't going anywhere," the cop retorted, his voice rising as he stood up and grabbed my mother's arm. "You wanna fucking bet? Did you bother to ask them how old they were? They're 16 and 17. Did you give them a chance to call for a parent or guardian to be present while you questioned them? Or did you just assume because they were in an expensive ass car they were up to no good. If I were you, I'd take your dirty ass hands off of me, sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up, and let me and my kids walk out of here," my mother asserted, her demeanor unwavering.

The look on the cop's face told me that he realized he wasn't messing with your average black family. My momma wasn't one to be messed with, and he was about to find that out the hard way.

My brother and I rose with smiles on our faces, trailing behind Momma as we made our way out. But before we could get too far, she spun around to face the cop. "And the next time you got questions for my kids, call our damn lawyer," she declared, tossing a business card at him with a flick of her wrist.

As we walked down the hall, people instinctively cleared a path for us. While most would have assumed we were headed towards freedom, I knew better. The looming storm of a tongue-lashing awaited us the moment we hit the car.

The car door slammed shut, and as Momma shifted into drive, she unleashed her fury. "What the fuck happened?" she demanded, her eyes darting between us. "It wasn't us," Antwon pleaded. "I'm so tired of hearing that shit from you. Why the hell were you in some side of town I never even gave you permission to be in? Its 2am and I am getting a call that my kids are getting pulled over after leaving some hole in the wall. Y'all keep fucking forgetting I got eyes everywhere" Momma's voice rose sharply. "Momma," Antwon tried to interject. "Shut up, don't 'momma' me. And you, girl, sitting back there all quiet. I'm talking to you too. I didn't work this hard to give y'all a better life for you to be running around the raggedy parts of the city partying with people beneath us," she scolded.

I remained silent. The truth was, the only reason we had snuck out was because she kept us on lockdown, stifling our lives. Contrary to the facade she presented, the life she was trying to shield us from was no secret to me. Momma owned hair salons worldwide, but that was just a front for the drug operation she ran. After my father's passing, she took the reins and expanded it into an empire.

"Princess, I'm talking to you," she snapped, pulling me from my reverie. "All I was doing was rapping," I replied, deflecting her attention as I gazed out the window, lost in contemplation of the tangled web we were caught in.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And when they had me, they should've named me the greatest because I don’t care who started it, I’m the one who's gonna make it. You niggas out here imitating, but I'm the seed of the originator," I spat out fiercely, standing my ground at another underground rap battle. My brother Antwon stood by my side, vigilant, scanning the crowd as things could quickly spiral out of control in these intense rap battles.

As I owned the stage, devouring my opponents with my lyrical prowess, the energy in the room crackled with anticipation. When my time was up, the next rapper stepped forward. Looking like your average corner boy he stated "Originator? That makes me laugh, more like the seed of a lying-ass murderer," he taunted, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. My expression darkened as he mentioned my father, hitting a nerve I thought was buried deep.

Despite the rage bubbling inside me, I knew I had to maintain my composure, especially for the sake of my brother. I extended my hand, halting Antwon in his tracks, sensing the fire in his eyes, ready to erupt into a full-blown conflict. I often marveled at his unwavering loyalty to a man we never even met, our father Keyz. He believed that loyalty started at home, and beyond our mother Sasha, our dad commanded his allegiance even in death.

As the other rapper rapped, I brushed him off and instead locked eyes with one of the most attractive men I had ever seen in the crowd. His flirtatious wink and lip lick sparked a fire inside me, momentarily distracting me from the ongoing battle. Lost in a moment of desire, I barely registered the end of the other rapper's performance, but when Antwon tapped me, I snapped back to reality.

"That was cute. Sounds like I hit a nerve with you. You huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf. Were you expecting me to come up here scared, just rapping about how good my pussy is?" I fired back, my confidence radiating. "Well, news flash, the level of my pussy is way too good to even mention in a battle with you. I'm pretty and smart with a mouth that cuts like iron. This battle could keep going on with me using word you didn’t understand. But I’ll save you the embarrassment  because  I don't play with the help," I proclaimed boldly, igniting the crowd's excitement. I smirked, scanning the audience to lock eyes with the mysterious man, only to find him vanished. Nonetheless, the announcement of my victory was all the validation I needed.

Stepping off the stage, Antwon informed me that his girl, Queen, had just arrived. I acknowledged the news and settled into a seat in the lounge area, engrossed in my phone. Suddenly, a voice pulled me from my screen. "You were real nice up there on that stage," the mystery guy from the crowd stood before me. "Thank you," I replied, flashing a smile. "It's Princess, right?" he inquired, extending his hand. "Yes," I confirmed. "I'm Sunih," he introduced himself. "Nice to meet you," I responded, studying him intently. His well-dressed appearance caught my eye, but it was his caramel skin and intriguing blend of boyish charm and mature demeanor that captured my attention.

"Can I sit with you?" Sunih asked, and I gestured for him to take a seat. As we settled in and started talking, I found Sunih to be not only handsome but also intelligent, and the more we conversed, the more drawn I became to him. "Listen, as much as I'd like to chat longer, I gotta bounce and get back to work," he informed me. "Work?" I inquired. "Yeah." "What do you do?" I probed. "What do you think?" he retorted sarcastically. "Oh, a street pharmacist," I guessed. "Yeah, just swung by to check out the girl everyone's talking about, tearing it up on the mic with those hood niggas," he chuckled.

"Well, can I get your number? I'd love to continue our conversation," I proposed. "Damn, you beat me to the punch," he teased. "My bad," I chuckled. "Give me your phone," Sunih requested. Handing over my phone, I watched as he entered his number. While his head was down, focused on my phone, I noticed Antwon eyeing me, making his way over with a determined stride.

"I texted myself so now I have your number," Sunih informed me. "Okay, but brace yourself, here comes my big brother," I cautioned him. "Who are you?" Antwon interrogated as he approached, with Queen trailing close behind. "I'm Sunih," he introduced himself, extending his hand. Antwon glanced at Sunih's hand and ignored the gesture. "Why are you over here with my sister?" he demanded. "Antwon, don't start! We were just talking," I intervened. "I'm not talking to you, Princess, I'm talking to him," Antwon clarified. Before Sunih could respond, the rapper I had faced off against earlier in the battle emerged, adding a new layer of tension to the already charged atmosphere.

"Can I help you?" Antwon asked, his voice laced with defiance. "Ain't no way you beat me. Y'all had to pay for that shit," he sneered.

"Man, go ahead. She won, it's over," Sunih interjected, his tone firm.

"Sunih, this your bitch? You sticking up for her?" the guy taunted.

"Watch your fucking mouth," Antwon warned, his eyes narrowing.

"Greg, you lost. Just go ahead, there will be other battles," Sunih reasoned.

"Yeah, just take the loss," I chimed in, trying to defuse the tension.

"Hell no, fuck that. Ain't no way I lose to her," Greg insisted stubbornly.

"If you're hard up for that little $1000 reward, go get your ass back on the street," Antwon retorted, his patience wearing thin.

"Y'all daddy's name might have moved people, but you don't, little nigga. Fuck you and that bitch," Greg spat out the insult. Before he could finish his sentence, Antwon and Sunih simultaneously retaliated, landing swift blows on either side of his face. The club erupted into chaos as the fight escalated.

More guys appeared, and without hesitation, Queen and I joined Sunih and Antwon in the brawl. We seemed to be gaining the upper hand until someone pulled a gun and fired shots, sending everyone scattering in panic. Amidst the chaos, Queen hopped into a car with her girls while Sunih vanished into the night. Antwon and I quickly jumped into his truck, but within minutes, flashing lights appeared in our rearview mirror.

Before we knew it, we were being pulled over by the cops, the night taking a dangerous turn.
