Part 1: Demaris and Robert
“Julian you really have a gem here for a wife,” Al said as we stood talking at the opening of Demaris’s new store. I looked at my wife and took a sip of my drink before saying “ I’m not sure how I got so lucky.” then I kissed my beautiful wife on the cheek. “Thank you, baby,” she said with a smile on her face. “I’m going to go get another drink bae. Do you want another?” i said to my wife. As i lick my lips as I admired my wife in this wine-colored spaghetti strap sequins dress that showed just enough boob and flattered her curvy figure. Demaris shock her head. “No bae I’m still finishing this one bae, put you drink up so we can celebrate more when we get home,” she said and winked at me.
I walked away and headed over to the bar that we had set up. I watched from across the room with a smile on my face watching my wife as she mingled with this majority white crowd. We had prayed and dreamed of the day when we would be able to do this and Demaris’s hustle had us here. I was so happy for. I turned and order my drink with the bartender and then turned back around to watch her work the room.
“Your Demaris’s husband right?” I heard a voice from me say. I turned and smile “yes I am Robert Williams,” I said extending a hand. The woman shook hands with me and looked me up and down. “Nice meeting you.” she said “same to you make sure to shop it some great items here,” i said. The woman nodded her head and grabbed her drink from the bar. As she and her friend walked past me I could hear her friend whispering to her “you know they say Demaris’s built him up the say way she built her brand.” “well, she hella good at the thing she builds,” the woman said staring at me.
In the eight years, we had been married it didn’t bother me anymore that most people only knew me as Demaris’s husband. I had watched my wife grow and blossom so much it was amazing and it was amazing being called her husband. Or at least that’s what I told myself.
As I stood at the bar another woman voice came from the side of me. “She looks beautiful.” The voice said. I turned slowly to look and almost choked on the site. “What are you doing here?” I asked trying not to make a scene. “Robert baby was wrong you don’t like seeing me in public?” Sabrina said. “Why are you here?” I asked feeling nervous. “Your why I’m here honey, and her,” Sabrina said looking in the direction of Demaris. “Don’t start no shit in here?” I said to here. “I would never do that baby. As long as you keep me happy. So when this is over drop her off and I’ll be waiting for you.” She said. “I have plans with my wife,” I told her. “I could go talk to your wife and change all the plans if you’d like,” Sabrina said with a devilish smile. “Relax I’ll figure it out,” I said noticing Demaris coming our way.
“Good I’m so excited to see what this store has to offer,” Sabrina said as Demaris Approach. “I promise you won’t be disappointed my lovely wife her is the owner and she makes or hand picks everything in here,” I said bring Demaris into the conversation. Demaris extended her hand. “Hello, I’m Demaris and welcome to plush.” She said. “Sabrina… your store is beautiful” she replied back. “Thank you so much please take a look around and see if there’s anything you like. We’d love to have you as a loyal customer.” Demaris says. “I will definitely bring looking around to see what my man can get me to keep me happy.” She said before walking away.
Demaris turned to me smiling from ear to ear. “All the blood sweat and tears now look. I did it. I brought us from nothing now we are here. I have people from all different walks of life in my shop buying my merchandise.” She said so excitedly. “You sure did baby. I’m so proud and happy for you.” I said to her. Then gave her a kiss followed by a hug. As I embraced my wife I couldn’t help but notice Sabrina staring at me.
The next few hours flew by it could have been because of the drinks I was tossing back and that my mind was in another place. We had made it home and Demaris was still going on about how happy she was with the turnout tonight. I sat on the bed taking off my shoes as she stood at the dresser removing her jewelry.
Out of nowhere she turned around and looked at me with her eyes all bigger. “What’s wrong?” I said confused on if I was that zoned out and had missed something. “Baby I’ve been going on and on about the store and I forgot about you.” She said. “Huh?” I said back to her. “I never want you to think I don’t appreciate you. You are an amazing husband Robert. You put as much blood, sweat, and tears into my dream and vision as I do. You believed in me when no one else did when I was just an online boutique trying to get customers you kept me motivated. You’ve loved me through it all and even when it goes hard. The store wouldn’t be what it is without every bit of paint, shelves and everything else you put into it. Plush still just mine it’s our because with having us I wouldn’t have had a reason to go so hard. Without having you to have my back I would have given up. Without the love and encouragement, you provided me I would have never overcome my fears and started. You prayed with me and stepped out on faith. I love and appreciate you so much for that Robert.”
I was speechless and Demaris words brought me to tears. I could I? Why would I? Why did I? Demaris seen the tears rolling down my face and came over to the bed and sat next to me. She put her hands on my face and gave me a kiss. “I love you,” She said smiling. “I love you too,” I replied. As I looked into my wife’s eyes I took a hard swallow. Demaris got up from the bed and went back to the depressed as she took out her ear I said to her. “Bae I have something to tell you.” “What's up?” She said with her back facing me as she looked at me through the mirror. “Please know that I love you and because I love you I have to be honest,” I said and took a pause. “Be honest about what? She asked as she held both her earrings in her hand. I looked down and then back up at her. “I stepped out of our marriage and I cheated on you.”
